Mystery Missile Off California Coast

Yesterday’s big discussion on Memeorandum was the mystery missile off the California coast.  Both the Pentagon and Norad were baffled about where it came from. The latest guess seems to be that this is a plane’s contrail, but given the line of sight it looks like a missile.

Was it an accidental launch and everyone is playing “cover your ass”? Was it an amateur rocket launch? Whatever the case maybe, the fact that we don’t have a solid answer is troubling to say the least.  We all know our government is suffering from a bad case of “the dysfunctionals”, but come on.

I think we will be hearing more about this in the near future and we probably won’t like the official answer.

Lessons not learned: Barbara Boxer and Jerry Brown win

Given how tight these races were I am not surprised Boxer and Brown won. California has to learn its lesson the hard way.  Both Boxer and Brown have zilch for changing California’s slide into the abyss.

My dear friend Left Coast Rebel will have his work cut out for him for the next couple of years.  Hey, LCR I have several renovated rooms at my house here in sane New Jersey for both you and the Mrs., think about it!

Meg vs. The Maid

I just got though reading about Meg Whitman’s alleged "illegal alien maid" problem and I have to say something doesn’t pass the smell test.

The maid is basically claiming that work at Meg’s was a living hell (a $23 per hour living hell) and that Whitman knew she was illegal. The maid also claims she was kicked to the curb last year when Whitman decided to run for governor. Whitman has fired back saying the maid is “full of it” and has released the maid’s application and documentation (SS card and Calif driver’s license).

The maid’s (Nicky Diaz Santillan) story reads like it was written for maximum effect. Even the sob story about the extra chores she had to do.

Never mind that on her application the extra chores she complains about are checked as things she would do.

The only part in the maid’s story I can take seriously is the notification from Social Security back in 2003 saying there was a problem with her Social Security number.  Should proof of this come out, bye-bye Meg Whitman.  Without it, I would have to say the whole thing is manufactured for political reasons.

The guys at Hillbuzz have seen this ploy before:
[…]Because what the Democrats are doing to Meg Whitman in California today is exactly what Obama did to Republican candidate Jack Ryan in 2004…manufacturing a scandal so that Republicans will abandon a candidate and allow a Democrat to walk away with an election in a cake walk…in election that Democrat would have actually lost.
Gloria Allred is having a press conference today with a Mexican maid who’s claiming she was abused by Meg Whitman.  The goal for Democrats here is two-fold:
(1) to alienate Hispanic voters from the Republicans
(2) to portray Whitman as a Leona Helmsley-grade wealthy tyrant that’s unrelatable to voters suffering financial problems
Democrats excel at the politics of personal destruction because this is the only thing they know.
I could not agree more. Just read Santillan's tear jerker testimony and it sure enough fits the Democrats two goals perfectly.
Until proof comes out showing Whitman received and then ignored Social Security's letters, I am taking Ms. Santillan’ story with a very huge grain of salt.

Federal Judge Vaugh Walker finds California’s Proposition 8 Unconstitutional

Judge Vaugh Walker’s ruling should not come as a surprise to anyone who followed the trial.  What Judge Walker concluded was that:
Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.
Here is the full court decision (h/t Legal Insurrection)

Perry v. Schwarzennegger - Trial Court Decision

This is by no means the end of the story. Judge Walker’s ruling will no doubt be challenged and this case will work its way up to the Supreme Court. This ruling will surely bring renewed focus onto Elena Kegan’s confirmation. How could it not, given the persistent questions regarding her sexual orientation?

On the issue of gay marriage, I think I hold an unpopular opinion among conservatives. In the battle over gay marriage, I believe conservative’s best efforts will only delay the inevitable. I say this because, time and time again when I discuss this issue with 20 and 30 year olds on both sides of the aisle, I find a large degree of acceptance. Unless these 20 and 30 year olds have some sort of epiphany regarding gay marriage, they will eventually undo all the roadblocks currently being put in place by this generation.

Because so many of the younger generation is on board with gay marriage, I have to wonder why gay rights activist insist upon foisting gay marriage on this generation. Time and time again this generation has made it quite clear they believe marriage is between one man and one woman. Ten years from now when the twentysomethings and thirtysomethings gain political clout, gay rights activist will have what they want without much of a fight.

Gay rights activists’ current plan to use the court system to push the issue today seems like a risky endeavor. It may very well backfire and create a legal precedent that may take yet another generation to overturn.

Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina win in California

It was a big night for the ladies in California. Moneybags Meg Whitman won the GOP nomination for Governor and Sarah Palin’s Mamma Grizzly Carly Fiorina took the GOP nomination for Senate.
New York Times: WASHINGTON — Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman, who ascended to the top of the business world before turning to politics, prevailed in their respective battles for the G.O.P. nominations for the U.S. Senateand Governor in California, setting the stage for costly general election fights this fall.
Ms. Fiorina, a former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, beat Tom Campbell, a former congressman, and Chuck DeVore, whose candidacy has drawn the backing of many Tea Party activists. She will face the incumbent senator, Barbara Boxer, in the fall.
Ms. Whitman, the former chief executive of eBay and a billionaire, had invested a small share of her personal fortune to prevail in the governor’s race over Steve Poizner, the state insurance commissioner, who put up $24 million of his own money into his primary campaign. She will challenge Jerry Brown, the state’s attorney general, who was first elected governor of California three decades ago
Both women handily defeated their rivals. In the case of Meg Whitman crushed Steve Poizner 64-26 and Carly Fiorina dusted both Tom Campbell and Chuck Divore (Fiorina 55, Campbell 24 and DeVore 17). In Fiorina’s case, I am curious if Palin’s endorsement is what helped her break out of the pack.

So, now the battle lines are set. Moneybags Meg will take on the throw back Jerry Brown and Mama Grizzly Fiorina will square off against the elitist Barbara Boxer. I think I will have to send my good friend Left Coast Rebel a clothespin for his nose and a bottle of Grey Goose so he can bring himself to vote in November.

7.2 Magnitude earthquake hits Southern California and Mexicali

I was visiting with family most of the day and totally did not hear about this until now. I immediately scooted over to my blogger buddy Left Coast Rebel who experienced the quake first hand. LCR has a first hand account and photos.
From CNN: (CNN) -- A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck northwest Mexico's Baja California on Sunday, rattling Arizona and southern California, and leaving at least two dead and 100 injured in Mexico, authorities said.
At least one person was killed in a building collapse in Mexicali, Mexico, according to the assistant director of civil protection in Tijuana. The other victim died when he ran from his residence into the street and was hit by a car, said Alfredo Escobedo, Mexico's director of civil protection.
All 100 injuries are concentrated in Mexicali, Escobedo said.
In California and Arizona, there were no immediate reports of injuries and only limited reports of damages.
The quake struck at 3:40 p.m. (6:40 p.m. ET) about 110 miles east-southeast of Tijuana, Mexico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
