The panel also ordered Rangel to pay restitution of any unpaid taxes. [MORE]
I am not going to go into all the nitty gritty about what happened here. You can read the rest of the story at The Hill. Instead, I want to say why I think censure is such a wrist slap.
Rangel has been stinking up Congress for 20 years now. Are we to believe that this guy is ignorant of House ethics rules? If he doesn’t know the rules backwards and forward by now, then he must be the dimmest bulb in Congress.
Furthermore, it is absolutely galling that anyone in charge of the tax code can claim ignorance for skirting the tax code. On second thought, the only thing more galling was putting tax cheat Geithner in charge of the Treasury!
If any of us from the unwashed masses were to monkey around with our taxes the way Geithner and Rangel did, we would be wearing orange jumpers instead of getting promotions or wrist slaps. Why then should any of these fools catch a break?
Now that more and more Americans are waking up to the corruption plaguing Washington, we really need to start finding ways to hold these Congress critters to the same standard we are held to. After all they are no better than us.
